Base Patterns

I have always loved analogies.

They expose a truth about the world.

They tell us that things are more connected. They tell us that we are more connected.

I recently read an article that I can't seem to get out of my head.

It was written by David Chang (Chef of Momofuku fame) and it's called, "The Unified Theory of Deliciousness." I found it referenced in another article (well, blog post really) that I also can't seem to get out of my head, "The Tara Seshan Canon."

I am not going to spoil David Chang's article, it's about a 5-10 min read and I think it's fully worth it whether you're into food or not.

I am going to highlight something that the article mentions. Specifically the thing I can't seem to get out of my head.

Base patterns.

Base patterns are exactly what they sound like.

A set of similar patterns that can be found among seemingly different things.

In a way, they are the foundations of a good analogy.

The beauty of base patterns is that they can be both intangible and/or tangible.

Music is full of base patterns.

Rather than explaining it, let's watch Ed Sheeran tell us about it:

That's an example of a tangible base pattern.

I was recently thinking about how developing people into leaders in an organization is similar to the concept of lead nurturing from the digital marketing world.

Both share the intangible base pattern of segments, behaviours, and different paths based on those behaviours.

I'm writing this post mostly to plant a seed with you, dear reader.

I am deeply interested in this idea and if it happens to stick with you too, I would love for you to share some of your favourite base patterns with me.
